Last Week’s Virtual Console Release Proves Once and For All, Nintendo Doesn’t Get It

DS_MaroKartDS_Red-boxart

Seriously, Nintendo? I didn’t even necessarily believe this when I first read it. Last week, Nintendo only released one virtual console game, Mario Kart DS. This makes no sense to me. They just offered Platinum Club Nintendo members Mario Kart 7 for free, and released the second batch of DLC for Mario Kart 8 THE SAME DAY. Who is going to spend $10 or whatever to play an inferior version of Mario Kart? Like, I get that some people are nostalgic for Mario Kart 64 because you played it at some boy/girl party the same night they got to first base, but there is a line to be drawn with these games.

Super Mario Kart and Super Mario Kart 64 illicit nostalgia, and are slightly more unique in their own rights, so I can see why maybe someone would want to play them. Super Circuit is not good. Double Dash and Wii are both fine games that are totally playable to this day. Mario Kart DS was one of the better games at the time, and it was relatively impressive what they did to get it on a handheld that truly wasn’t that powerful, but come on, who is going to choose this game over any of the games that came after it, or even Double Dash? Nostalgia isn’t even that high for Mario Kart right now, with both current Nintendo systems already having an entry.

Even worse, Nintendo of America’s official twitter account sent this tweet last Thursday.

Really, bruh? I can’t tell if this is them actually attempting to justify what a bad move this was, or them going to their social media guy being like “Listen, we released Mario Kart DS this week– yeah I know. Listen, it’s already been done, can you just put a little spin on it so we don’t seem totally ridiculous?”

What a waste of a week. I think it’s finally time for me to get into how I feel about how Nintendo is treating this new generation of Virtual Console.

CHALLENGER APPROACHING just kidding it’s probably nothing

ryu

A poster on the Smash Bros subreddit, shinyquagsire23, detailed in a recent post all the info he “data mined” from the new update that reached Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS that added the existence of DLC characters. OMG you guys you won’t believe what he found. SOUND CLIPS

Victory themes for Lucas and Mewtwo, obviously, were found in the update, but so were two victory themes, one labeled Roy, and the other Ryu. Roy being added as a DLC character is not too far fetched, but we may be jumping to conclusions to say that Ryu is next up. Sure, it’s possible, but there’s no way that’s the logical conclusion. There was also stage music found for his stage from Street Fighter 2, sounding almost ripped from the original cartridge. Most logical explanation, a retro-inspired street fighter stage and a Ryu Mii outfit that changes your victory theme. Nothing to see here, move along.

Oh and yeah, Roy. Cool, sure. Let’s all pay $5 for another Marth clone.

Next Destiny Expansion Won’t Include a Raid and How Am I The Only One That’s Pumped?

houseofwolves

In Destiny, the two existing raids represent the greatest challenges and most unique experiences the game has to offer, with rare and unique equipment your prizes for you and the other five members of your fire team if you can overcome the hurdles before you.

But I wouldn’t know anything about that.

Dot Arcade and the ESRB: If You’re Younger Than Ten, Please Don’t Look at Drawings of Women

Dot_Arcade_promoSo today, I went on the WiiU eshop looking to see what was up with the new Virtual Console games, and a game called Dot Arcade caught my eye. Check out the trailer on Nintendo’s official website, along with screenshots and some other info here.

I curiously watched the trailer. It began, as all trailers do, with the local video game ratings board’s rating. The ESRB gave Dot Arcade a rating of E10+ for “Suggestive themes.” I didn’t think anything of it, as I see tons of trailers and almost always disregard anything the ESRB says about it. “Huh,” I thought, watching the trailer, “interesting idea for a game.” And when I was done watching, my mind drifted back to the ESRB rating. Suggestive themes? What?

Horror Game Nevermind Comes to Greenlight (Did I Mention it Requires a $100 Biofeedback Sensor?)

Yard

Nevermind is a horror game that claims to change based on how scared you are, measured by a biofeedback device (sold separately). The creators say the game will offer the following features:

  • Cutting edge biofeedback-enhanced gameplay
  • A new, accessible take on horror-adventure games
  • Surreal, abstract mindscapes filled with secrets to unearth and puzzles to solve
  • Helps players practice techniques to manage everyday feelings of stress and anxiety

A fascinating concept indeed. Especially the last part. I wonder if there’s actual educational elements or if it’s a “trial by fire” situation.

Check out the trailer.

The Trailer for the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem Crossover is Completely Insane and You Should Probably Watch it

Not going to lie, I did not see that coming AT ALL. A WiiU game where you play as cyber knights to fight demons? This is anything beyond what I could have seen coming, and I think I’m okay with it. If nothing else, it looks like a brand new gameplay experience. And it doesn’t seem to play like Fire Emblem, so that’s awesome.
